Main square of the city of Jurevets
Russia

The oldest city in the Ivanovo area. Jurevts it is based in 1225 by the Vladimir prince Jury II as Jurev-Povolsky. In 1237 has been destroyed by army Batyja. Based for protection of the Central and Northern Russia against attacks of nomads, later has turned to the important trading knot. The status of a city since 1778. For city merits before the country Catherine II has welcomed Jurevets the nominal arms: in spite of the fact that it not the provincial centre, on a heraldic board is only a city symbol, without the provincial arms. The arms of Jurevtsa — on a blue field — a silver watchtower. In 1954-57 the Gorki water basin has been filled. Unlike many other settlements which have been flooded by the Volga water basins, centre Jurevtsa has been protected by a dam. At a normal water level in a water basin, the old part of Jurevtsa is on one and a half metre below a water basin surface
