Despite its bizarre name, Man Eaten Lake is located in the Marble Mountain Wilderness west of Greenview, California. It is located in a deep cirque w/ high cliffs near to the Pacific Crest Trail, however one has to downclimb about 600 feet to reach its lovely green waters. The origin of the name is a translation from the Karuk tribe, whose roots are tied to this region, the lake called "the place where a person ate himself long ago". The name refers to a story about a man who, in a fit of hunger, ate his entire family and finally devoured his own flesh; at the end he became a roving skeleton, still seeking food. Today the lake is a great place to take a dive in & cool off from the warm air (& no, despite being 112 feet deep, there is likely no underwater monsters here).
