The Monastery of Santa Maria d'Alcobaça, north of Lisbon, Portugal, is founded in the twelfth century by King Alfonso I.. By the magnitude of its dimensions, clarity of its architectural style, the beauty of the material and the care taken in execution, it is considered a masterpiece of Cistercian Gothic art. It is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1989. It is declared in July 2007 as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
