Monte del Estado

Maricao State Forest, commonly known as Monte del Estado, is a state forest located in the eastern Cordillera Central mountains of Puerto Rico. It was one of the first forest reserves in Puerto Rico to be officially designated a state forest. Covering an area of 10,803 acres (43.72 km²), it is the largest of the 20 forestry units in the Puerto Rico state forest system1.

The forest’s unique environment is shaped by its humid climate, serpentinite soils, and a high rate of animal and plant endemicity. It spans the municipalities of San Germán, Sabana Grande, and Maricao in the western region of the Cordillera Central. The elevation of Monte del Estado is 1,417 feet (432 meters) above sea level1.
