The first Weir complex in the river Meuse was officialy opened in 1925 by Queen Wilhelmina. It was constructed together with the weirs at Roermond, Belfeld, Afferden/Sambeek and Grave in order to make the river Meuse navigable for ships upto 2000 ton.
