南仁山區，位於墾丁國家公園東北角，面積約五千多公頃，全區低山綿延，兼具丘陵、山谷、湖沼、溪流、草原等複雜多變的地形地勢，是本省目前僅存的低海拔原始林區。

其間孕育著一千二百多種原生維管束植物，約占台灣的三分之一。此外，鳥類(97種)、蝴蝶類(129種)、兩棲類(12種)、爬蟲類(24種)、哺乳類(12種)等種類繁多，是生態資源的寶庫，因此被劃為國家公園的「生態保護區」。
