New Lanark, Scotland - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Scotland
New Lanark mills were the largest in the country in 19th century, thanks to the supply of cheap energy provided by the nearby Falls of Clyde. Mill Number Three, built in 1790, employed almost 400 people, two/thirds of them women. Today it generates electricity for parts of the village.
