North Palace, Masada, Israel
Israel

Herod the Great developed Masada as a mountain fortress, where he could flee to in time of danger. He also built a pleasure palace on the narrow northern spur of the mountain. The upper level of the three-tiered palace housed his private accommodation and the lower levels were designed for relaxation and entertainment of special guests.

David used this mountain top as a stronghold, while he was fleeing from Saul (1 Samuel 22.4; 24.22; 2 Samuel 5.17).
