The northern lights made a special rare appearance from near my campsite outside of Bartle, California at midnight on May 11, 2024. A huge geomagnetic storm spanned all across the northern hemisphere (& southern hemisphere) allowing for the lights to be visible as far south as Hawaii, the largest storm to occur since 2003. After a warm hot day the sky was already a tint of red past dusk however I waited until midnight when the sliver of the moon set allowing for full nighttime view. The pillars were quite pronounced as they moved east to west but to the untrained naked eye appeared opaque white. A large plume of the green hues had formed to the northeast & were making their way during this shot. A 4-10 second exposure enabled for these vivid colors.
