Ongii khiid - Mongolian Buddist Temple - MONGOLIA
Mongolia

The monastery of Ongi represents the whole of the ruins of two monasteries that overlook the Ongi river in the province of Dundgovi in central-southern Mongolia. The Barlim monastery is located on the north bank of the river, while the Khutagt monastery is located on the south bank. It was one of the largest monasteries in Mongolia and was home to over a thousand monks.

There were 17 temples on the northern side of the river and 11 on its southern bank, along with four Buddhist universities. Ongiin Khiid was a place of devotion and study until the complex was destroyed in the 1937 communist purges when over 200 lamas were killed.
