Overlooking Turtle Rock, Gorkhi-Terelj National Park
Mongolia

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is only 40 km from Ulaanbaatar, the capitol of Mongolia. The southern part has a small zone with tourist camps and attractions, but much of the park in relatively inaccessible.

This panorama was taken from a small outcrop overlooking the famous Turtle Rock (Melkhii Khad, old name Mungut Khad).

There is a legend that after suffering heavy losses in the unbalanced battle against Manchu soldiers in Zuunmod, the Oirad Galdanboshigt Khan escaped briefly stopped near Turtle Rock with his remaining soldiers. He decided to hide his gold and silver in the fissure at the top of Turtle Rock. Since then locals have worshipped and made offerings to Mungut Khad to bring good fortune. His Manchurian consort could not leave the treasure behind, so she was also left behind in the fissure. She turned into Khuukhen Mountain, a mountain northwest of Turtle Rock in the shape of an elegant woman peacefully lying face up.
