Authentic Soviet interior at Kaunas pharmacy "Vilties vaistinė", Lithuania
Lithuania

Kaunas pharmacy Vilties vaistinė, situated on Laisvės Alėja (Liberty Boulevard, one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe), was established in 1925, and in 1958 it moved to its present location. Its nowadays unique interior – with large wall fresco, stalactite-like glass plafonds, decorative wooden counters and cabinets – was designed in 1982.

Creation of fresco required utmost concentration – if an element was not completed within six hours, it should have been repainted anew. Marble blocks for flooring were “officially stolen” from the remainders of marble used for construction of the Lithuanian nuclear power plant, or, more precisely, they were “exchanged” for the medical spirit. Arūnas Šiaučiulis, the owner of the Vilties vaistinė, says with an ironical smile – “the power plant has long gone, but the pharmacy remains alive”.
