The castle of Tomar was built by the Templars in 1160, under the leadership of the master of the province Gualdim Pais (1156-1196) during the Reconquista. Inside the fortress is the Convent of the Order of Christ which include all architectural styles practiced in Portugal between the twelfth and eighteenth centuries, key witness in particular the Manueline style.
