The Santiago Railway Museum Park was founded on December 19, 1984, out of interest and the need to shape a museum that would preserve and value the historical collection of machines of high heritage value that the Company of the State Railways. From the union of public-private wills, it was possible to structure the collection in the form of a park, with the help of the Illustrious Municipality of Santiago, which provided land within the Quinta Normal Park, and the Private Corporation for the Dissemination of Science and Technology, which at that time was working on generating the first technological museum in Chile, the Science and Technology Museum, which has operated in parallel with the Railway Museum Park to this day.
The pieces that are exhibited in the two hectares of park were carefully selected for their historical value or for their technical characteristics, from an incipient collection, which the workers of the disappeared Central Maestranza de San Bernardo had preserved in their facilities. Over the years, machines and a significant collection of minor objects have been added, such as maps, plans, photographs, bibliography and historical records, generating one of the most important collections of the railway heritage of our country.
During the 2010 earthquake, the museum's Station House suffered significant damage. As a result of this situation, a restoration project was carried out that allowed the house to be in a very good state of conservation today, generating the opportunity to prepare a modern and valuable museography of the pieces that are part of the collection, which Today it is in the implementation phase.
