Rock Slide Rapid
I have heard this feature called several names including The Big Slide, The Slide, and The Rock Slide. But according to the River Guide To The Rio Grande: (Big Bend Natural History Association, 2019) the water feature is called Rock Slide Rapid. By deduction, then, I suspect the rock feature is named The Rock Slide. No matter the name, the Rock Slide is a large rock fall from the cliffs on the Mexico side of the river. The huge boulders filled the slope below the cliff as well as filling most of the river bed. The river flows among the boulders through different narrow channels. The rapid has at least four paddling moves, some of which result in banging against one of the semi-submerged boulders. Sometimes, after a high water event some of the channels get jammed with brush or trees. It is always good to scout this rapid on the river. In this panorama the river was flowing at about 385 cfs which made passage by rafts difficult through the usual line. We used much smaller inflatable kayaks and had no problems.
