The Hermitage of San Girolamo is nestled in the beautiful beech woods of Monte Fogliano. It is entirely carved into a volcanic extrusive rock that emerges from the soil of the beech forest and was thickly worked over time to create environments, shelters, seats, platforms and steps.
The site was the home of Brother Girolamo Gabrielli that although born of a noble Sienese family, in 1525 he retired to this place in penance devoting his whole life to meditation and prayer.
