Seiseki Sakuragaoka - Town Centre / 聖蹟桜ヶ丘 - 「耳をすませば」ロケ地
Tama

Annual trip to Tokyo, Aug-Sep 2011. A morning dash to Seiseki Sakuragaoka chasing after a single theme: locations depicted in Whisper of the Heart (Mimi o Sumaseba 耳をすませば), a 1995 Ghibli anime movie - one of my all-time Ghibli favourites.

Seiseki Sakuragaoka town centre - early on in the movie Shizuku encounters a big fat cat riding on the train and it gets off at the same station as hers. She decides to follow the cat out of curiosity and this is where the cat chase starts. The Keio Department Store (and its logo at the top of the building), in particular, is a hallmark of Shizuku's town centre as is also the case in the real-life Seiseki Sakuragaoka.

More About Tama

Tama area is the name of the western part of Tokyo Metropolis.  It consists of 26 cities, 3 towns and a village.  A lot of people (about 4 milion) live in a eastern half part of the area.  However, there are many mountains in the western part of Tama area, and there are very little flat land.  Many hiking spots are in the western area, so you can enjoy walking on the trail, camping, and so on.  If you see the beautiful mountain scene, you may not believe this is also in Tokyo.
