Spider Rock Overlook, Canyon de Chelly National Monument
Arizona
This panorama was taken at the Spider Rock Overlook on the south rim of Canyon de Chelly National Monument in the spring, as the shadows of late afternoon begin to fall across the valley. The view is dominated by spectacular Spider Rock, a slim spire that rises 800 feet from the valley floor. Legend has it that Spider Woman, the deity that taught the Navajo how to weave, lives atop Spider Rock. Local lore also has it that, as punishment for misbehaving, disobedient children might be carried to the top of the pinnacle by Spider Woman herself, or at least that was the threat made by many a child’s no doubt tired mother. Tourists visiting the overlook should warn their children to be on their best behavior!
