Saint Finnbarr's Cemetary can be found on the eastern side of Ben Eoligarry and about 1 mile north of Barra airport . The chapel found here is thought to be the first to be built here around the 6th century and the present buildings and remains around the year 1100 .
The surrounding burial grounds are home to the author Sir Compton McKenzie who is famous for writing "Whisky Galore" which was based on a true story that occurred on the nearby island of Eriskay . The book was later made into a movie in 1949 .
