Stehekin ~ Lady of the Lake

This very rainy autumn day (of October 2016) we can see The Lady of the Lake passenger boat serving the 55-mile long Lake Chelan, while leaving the dock to return down-lake to Chelan.


Down-lake is where roads connect to other roads between towns, while Stehekin is a somewhat of a secluded village that has limited forms of connection with the outside world.

The most popular two methods of travel between here and the other end of the lake are this passenger boat (or other barges or boats), or by way of seaplane (pontoon style airplanes), like Chelan Seaplanes.

Far fewer people take the third most popular method, being by foot. Yes, people at times hike up the lake, but perhaps more popular than that would be visitors out trekking along the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), dropping down from the Cascade Mountain Range into Stehekin to shower, do their laundry (facilities are here for them), recharge devices, restock (mostly from packages they have proactively had shipped in with additional materials and supplies), let someone else cook a meal or two, connect to Wi-Fi (for wireless Internet connection with the outside world), and rest a bit before continuing back up to the PCT to head out on their north or south trajectory.

And then there are some who are ready and/or wise enough (especially this late in the hiking season) to read the weather signs (it was snowing a bit higher up) and concider their skill level.  Some of them will call what they have accomplished "good enough" to stop their trek here for now.

If you decide to complete the trip another time, this is a beautiful safe place to close a chapter of any trek in the North Cascades, rather than continue on up to the Canadian border or down to Argentina or such. And it will be a spectacular place to come back to and continue the next chapter in their adventure to complete the Pacific Crest Trail.
