Gigapixel view from the top of Black Rock (elev. 6,900'), a relatively obscure & unknown unranked summit east of Hornbrook, California. It is a large pillar of rocks that rises above the dark forest & is in close proximity to the higher nearby Eagle Rock to the north. Views here include Ball Mountain & Willow Springs Mountain to the south, the Shasta Valley & distant Klamath Mountains w/ views also of Preston Peak, Mount Ashland, Pilot Rock, & Mt. McLoughlin.
Being a seldom visited locality, I was intrigued to see by the bush the etched name P.F. Aveline dated 1939, some 80 years ago. Having done Internet sleuthing, I am almost convinced the person's full name is Paul Fremont Aveline (June 25, 1887 - January 24, 1973) as that name is registered to the nearby Yreka/McCloud area. He married Ida Ollie Schneble on December 11, 1909 & may have been a chief engineer for the McCloud River Lumber Company (founded March 1896 & bought out in 1963). His age would have been 51-52 years when he visited this site. He is buried at the Masonic Lawn Cemetery in Sacramento, California.
