吉原祇園祭は「お天王さん」として伝承されてきた祭礼で、スサノヲノミコト(牛頭天王)を祀ることで悪病退散や無病息災を願う。
現在6の神社およびその氏子に当たる計26の町内が合同で祭りを行っている。
まつり期間中に曳き回される山車・屋台は全部で21台、1934年に制作された屋台が現存する最古のものとなっている。山車・屋台に決まった形式は無く、多様な形式の屋台が引き回される。
毎年6月の第2土・日曜日に行われる。
The eight islands of Japan sprang into existence through Divine Intervention.The first two gods who came into existence were Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto, the Exalted Male and Exalted Female. It was their job to make the land for people to live on.They went to the bridge between heaven and earth and, using a jewel-encrusted halberd, Izanagi and Izanami churned up the sea into a frothy foam. As salty drips of water fell from the tip of the halberd the first island was formed. Its name was Onogoro.So far, so good. But when Izanagi and Izanami first met on their island, Izanami spoke to Isanagi without being spoken to first.
