The Toadstools, Utah, USA
Utah

An easy hike off of Highway 89 near milepost 19, the Toadstools were formed when harder rock capped and protected the softer underlying layers like an umbrella, producing a tower as the unprotected areas eroded.  The ribbon-candy colored badlands here are part of the Carmel formation, formed from successive water deposted silt and sand during Jurassic time.  The fine silt and volcanic ash in the stone prevent plants from gaining a foothold and leave the rock easily eroded.
