The White Lighthouse, Skagen
Denmark

The White Lighthouse was built in 1747, making it Denmark's oldest lighthouse. Constructed of of red brick, it was painted white in the early 1800s. It guarded against ships foundering on the notorious shifting sands around Grenen, at the northern tip of Denmark where the North Sea and Baltic Sea converge.

It had a closed lantern mounted at the top which, to prevent the windows freezing and obscuring the light, was warmed by a coal fire in a basket. The lighthouse had four staircases so that the lightkeeper could safely attend the fire from an upwind direction.

It was superseded by the twice as tall Grey Lighthouse in 1858. Today it is a protected building and often used as an art exhibition hall.
