The Union Buildings in Pretoria provide the seat of the South Africa executive office. The building itself is not open to the public but the grounds and gardens are. Visitors can roam the well kept terrace gardens, and enjoy a view of the city below.
Far to the south west one can see the Voortrekker Monument, built as a national shrine to commemorate the heroes of the Great Trek of the Boers in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as President of South Africa here in 1994.
There still exists a law to this day that no building may be built in the city centre that would obstruct the view, line of sight, between the Voortrekker Monument and the Union Buildings.
