Valley of the Wolves / Valea Lupului, Romania
Strategic WWII battle here. The Iasi primary defensive line was through here. 2nd Ukrainian Front came through here once further west fell. From the visible in this photo current Botanical Gardens extending to Targu Frumos. Secondary line of defense was SW of Iasi going west. The Soviets were repelled at Targu Frumos. Next, a tank commander was ordered to attack Podu Iloaiei which he did and they succeeded in breaking through at heavy losses. The outcome of this battle led Romania's king to lead a coup against the convicted and executed war president Antonescu. Hitler no longer had a reliable supply of oil. From this hill above village Uricani, you can see the town of Vale Lupului (Valley of the Wolves) and the city of Iasi about three miles (5km.) away. Pardon my exuberant apprentice for being in the shot. My lovely assistant who was also present knows to stay from in front of the camera. When she's not sleeping.
