Varnes Fort lies in the municipality of Farsund, some miles to the north and east of Farsund itself. It was once part of the extensive fortifications the occupying Germans placed along the west coast of Norway. This particular artillery battery was manned by around one hundred soldiers, but never saw any military action. The weapons were only used in practice exercises. A visit here is likely to interest military history enthusiasts.
