Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat Woramahawihan is also known among locals as “Wat Yai” and is located at the foot of Naresuan Bridge on the city side of Nan River. This temple is believed to have been constructed in the year 1357 during the reign of Phra Maha Thamma Racha I of Sukhothai dynasty.
Present in this temple is the most beautiful and highly sacred golden sculpture of Phra Buddha Chinnarat, a large Sukhothai-style bronze statue of Lord Buddha that was cast in 1357. The most unique feature of this image is the way in which Lord Buddha is portrayed in the posture of submission. In fact, several contemporary Buddha images have been designed on the backdrop of Phra Buddha Chinnarat. Flame like halo present in background of the image is considered as a symbol of spiritual radiance.
