Whiterocks Natural Amphitheatre, Snow Canyon, Utah, USA
Utah

Between 175 and 200 million years ago, the region including Snow Canyon was part of a great dune desert at the western edge of the supercontinent Pangea.  The dunes deposited at that time were buried by river and later sediments as the environment changed.  Over time, the pressure from many thousands of feet of overlying sediment and the addition of cementing minerals fused the sand grains forming the petrified sandstone dunes that make up this natural amphitheatre.

Access to the amphitheatre is by way of an easy hike from the main road north of Snow Canyon State Park.  The adventurous may scramble to the saddle or one of the higher points for a view of Snow Canyon to the south.  From the amphitheatre, the hiker can see the prominent cinder cone to the east as well as the Pine Valley Mountains.
