Aaron Sheritt's hut used to stand here in the Woolshed Valley, north of Beechworth. He was friends with Joe Byrne, one of the Kelly Gang members, and helped them with the bank robberies in Euroa and Jerilderie. He was also a double agent, giving information to the police. Eventually, this situation became unacceptable and Joe Byrne shot his friend at this hut on the night of 26 June 1880. The Kelly Gang's plan was for the police constables, who were staying in the hut at the time, to go to Beechworth to raise the alarm and the police train will be sent from Melbourne. But the four police constables hid under the bed and did not go to Beechworth until the next morning. This and other delays upset the Kelly's plans and resulted in the siege at Glenrowan, which saw Ned Kelly captured and the rest of the gang killed.
