Important WWII tank battle here. Much of what happened on the eastern side of the war, we're not taught in the U.S. For example, this pivotal battle in Romania between this village of Scobâlţeni and Podu Iloaiei just to the north. The battle was pivotal because after the 2nd Ukrainian Front of the Soviet Army broke through during the Iasi-Chisinau Offensive, they were able to drive to the oil fields of Ploiesti thus depriving Hitler of his last source of oil, AND after the battle, King Michael of Romania led a coup at risk of his life against the war dictator Antonescu resulting in Romania switching sides to the Allies. Romania really had not choice to join Hitler at the start. Either do that, or be destroyed by Hitler or be destroyed by Stalin. At this village, on 20 August 1944, the Romanian forces destroyed 60 Soviet tanks at loss of 30 of their own. However, they pulled south. Nearby, the 2nd Ukrainian Front later broke through with the 6th Tank Army to seize the Siret River crossings and the Focșani Gap.
