Zermeiggern Chapel
Switzerland

The first Zermeiggern Chapel was built in 1707 and was rebuilt in 1910 in the idyllic village of Zermeiggern. With the construction of the Mattmark Dam, this village, as well as its chapel, would be submerged. Mattmark AG, the company that operated the reservoir, promised to build a new chapel at another location further downstream. Therefore, the chapel seen in this panorama is the current one that was transferred and rebuilt during the construction of the Mattmark dam in 1962, and is very close to the Zermeigern Hydroelectric Power Station. In this chapel, the names of the 88 victims of the Mattmark disaster are engraved on a memorial plaque. Natural disaster that occurred on August 30, 1965. An avalanche of ice and rocks from the tongue of the Allalin glacier fell on the works and workers of the Mattmark dam. It was considered one of the most tragic natural disasters in the Alps.
