Gigapixel view from the top of Tamarack Peak (elev. 6,891') southeast of Tennant, California. This relatively obscure summit has easy access but relatively few visitors. The peak has nice views of Mt. Shasta to the west, the Butte Valley & Klamath Basin areas to the north (w/ a distant view of Mt. McLoughlin), Medicine Lake Volcano region to the east, & many named small wooded summits to the south. Much of this area including the summit was hit by the Antelope Fire which started from a lightning strike on August 1, 2021 south of Tennant, California & lasted to October 15, 2021, burning a total of 145,632 acres. It was one of many large-scale fires brought on by an ongoing drought to the region.
On any past map this summit was called Squaw Peak. The name "squaw" is a common geographic name found across the country & in Canada however it has been deemed a derogatory term used against Native American women. In November 2021 US Department of the Interior had the word removed from use on the federal level.
