Church Of The Beheading Of John The Baptist
Jordan

This early 20th century Catholic church has recently been transformed into a fascinating destination for visitors and pilgrims thanks to the restoration of the ancient sites on which it stands. The facade of the church was built using ancient stones and the courtyard is dotted with Roman columns with Corinthian capitals. The chapel, dating back to the 19th century, now houses the visitor center and gift shop, and presents an interesting exhibition of photographs taken between 1902 and 1911. The real attraction of the complex, however, is the Acropolis Museum, housed in the ancient vaulted crypt: here there is a well, still functioning, which dates back to the Moabite era (3000 years ago).

Save some time and energy to climb to the top of the bell tower. In the last section you have to climb steep metal stairs with handrails and you have to juggle the bells and ropes, but it is definitely worth it, since from up there you can admire the most beautiful panorama of Madaba.
