Селение Шатово впервые упомянуто в документе 1627 г. в качестве вотчины, пожалованной в 1617 г. Ф.Г. Шишкину за заслуги, оказанные в годы Смутного времени на службе государю Василию Шуйскому. В 1654 г. сын Ф.Г.Шишкина Алексей выстроил в Шатово деревянную церковь во имя Архангела Михаила с приделом святителя и Чудотворца Николая.
В 1904 г. на средства серпуховского купца А.С. Рогова был возведён каменный храм Спаса Нерукотворного с приделом св. Архистратига Михаила и прочих Бесплотных сил. В 1910 г. строится кирпичная колокольня. Автор проекта храма С.Г. Аппельрот – помощник работавшего в Серпухове архитектора академика Р.И. Клейна, а с 1901 г. – городской архитектор Серпухова. Композиция и формы постройки представляют весьма устойчивый тип русского приходского храма с трапезной и двухъярусной колокольней. Простота и строгость объёмов здания; минимализм в его украшении в целом создают монументальный и стройный архитектурный образ.
В конце 1930-х гг. шатовский храм был закрыт. В 1967 г. в районе села строится Большое кольцо Протвинского ускорителя заряженных частиц (которое в настоящее время бездействует). В 1999 г. храм был передан Русской Православной Церкви, в нем совершаются молебны, панихиды.
