East Gate Tower
Taiwan

Rising up straight in Meinong District, East Gate Tower is believed to be reconstructed from former eastern gate in 1755 and so far enjoys a history of more than more 230 years. It was designated as a historical building by then Kaohsiung County Government in 2000 and a spiritual sign for local people. East Gate Tower has a height of about 10 meters, along with the moat, serve as the main barrier to defense former Minong settlements in the east side. It was once destroyed in the battles between Liutui Yimin Army and the Japanese military during the Japanese Colonial Period in 1895. Later it was rebuilt to a two-story, reinforced concrete building in 1937 as we see today. The front of the gatehouse hangs the banner of “Initiation of Civilization" is a simulation of a local elite’s inscription, which witnesses the changes of Meinong in time.
