Frys Hut, Howqua Hills
Victoria
In the late 1930s, Fred Fry, renowned as the Master Bushman, constructed his riverside high country residence. Employing split timber and his unique craftsmanship style, he built numerous huts across the region, such as Jamieson Hut, Ritchie's Hut, Gardiner's Hut, and Noonan's. Fred embraced a solitary lifestyle for an extended period in the Howqua Hills area, engaging in prospecting and supplying government agencies and fishermen. His experiences in the Howqua Valley served as the inspiration for Neville Shute’s 1950 novel ‘The Far Country’.
