At one time, a building materials plant in these quarries mined chalk. This explains the great depth of the career - not less than 15 meters, and steep chalk banks. However, at present, the quarries are gradually being filled with water, and a pine-juniper forest is growing around. Today, the chalk quarries of Sinka and Zelenka near Grodno are more like lakes, though very unusual and fabulous.
