Abbey Wind Turbine
Narragansett Bay

Brother Joseph of the Abbey School in Portsmouth, Rhode Island decided that his school needed to join the green revolution in a big way.  It's big and it revolves and it generates enough electricity to have payed off its contruction cost in only 3 years (that includes grant money if you're a stickler).  With a life expentancy of 25 years and the current value of electricity generated nearly $200k per anum, let's just say the bookeepers are happy.  The stance that Brother Joseph and the Abbey School have taken has already had an impact on local opinion.  The town of Portsmouth has followed suit in erecting an even larger turbine nearby.  It can even be seen from this panorama!  (Look north)  I love it and for the record, I didn't find the carcasses of dead birds strewn about its base.  I also didn't fall prone to the mysterious "turbine syndrome" and run from the site overcome with anxiety and screaming "the blades, the blades, they're always turning!"  I'm also told that the occaisional episode of "blinking windows" from the passing of a blade's shadow across your roof is ... well ... so occaisional that while annoying when it happens, not much of a problem.  For those of you who are quite sure that it is a real and constant threat to the well being of the populace .... I have a solution to blinking windows.  It's very high tech and I want credit for it in the anals of .... you know, like ... history.  Close your drapes for an hour.  It will pass like the siren of an ambulance and trouble you no more.

More About Narragansett Bay

Narragansett Bay dominates the geography of the tiny state of Rhode Island, extending 25 miles northwards and inland from the Atlantic Ocean right into the heart of its major cities.  It is fed by the watersheds of 3 major rivers: the Blackstone, the Taunton and the Pawtuxet.  Narragansett Bay defines the region's culture, its history, sense of place and quality of life.  The cities of Providence, Newport, Fall River, Warwick and Newport all owe their start to the bay and the opportunities it provided for water power, commercial growth and transportation.  Once badly polluted, the Narragansett Bay has made a tremendous comeback in the last 3 decades as communities all around the bay have revitalized their connection to the bay and taken steps to curb human impact.  Aerial Vr plans a series of panoramas intended to capture the area's unique natural beauty, both from its surface and from the air as well as the vitality and uniqueness of its communities.
