The old rock dam is a silent witness of the immense effort of European settlers to cope with the unreliable and irregular rainfall in outback Australia. As scenic as the rock formations of the Gawler Ranges may appear to visitors in today's air conditioned 4WD vehicles, as hostile these rocky ranges with hot summers and cold winters may have been for early settlers trying to make a living in this area.
