Selinunte è stata una delle più importanti colonie greche.

Questo tempio era ddicato ad Hera, (l' equivalente della romana Giunone), dea della fertilità, protettrice degli amanti, del matrimonio, e della fertilità.
Costruita attorno al 470/460 a.c., dai Dorii, fu distrutta da Cartagine nel 409 a.c.
