Urochische Kamennye Vorota 1
Russia

Autumn in the Kuvandyk region.

Among the landscape monuments of the nature of the region, which have many unique features, there is the urochische (tract) Kamennye Vorota (Stone Gate). It is located in the valley of one of the streams of the Elshanka river system, originating near the Sarinsky plateau, 6 km east of the village of Kidryasovo. In the upper reaches of this stream there is a rocky pinhole - a narrow gate. The height of the steep rocky slopes is 20 m on the right bank, 10 m on the left bank, and 15 m across the bottom. The rocks are composed of tuff-alevoliths and fine-grained tuff sandstones of Ordovician age.

On the swampy bottom of the log grows gallery black alder, on the edge of which beats a weakly expressed spring. The vegetation of the upper part of the gentle slopes is represented by herbage-fescue, and the lower part - labaznikovo-beautifully-eagle associations. The rich herbs of these unexpectedly lush meadow steppes make up the mountain clover, the crested moth, the goatskin purple, the thyme of the marshall, the Andrijewski clove, the yarrow, the noble, the sticky tar. Along the bed of the beams grow a medicinal blood-groove, white slumber, chieffeur of a lobel, a skawn trowel. On the swampy edge of the black alder, among the sedges, the candles of the orchis of the helmet are aroused. The vegetation of stony slopes and rocky outcroppings has a completely different appearance, typical petrophytes dominate here: Mugodzharye thyme, sun-loving clausia, hybrid hybrids, cornflower marshall, clove Urals, and mountain bramble.

This is right on the river Moskva in Moscow!Moscow has been the capital of Russia for almost its entire history. The exception is during the period of the Russian Empire, which lasted from 1721 until the Russian Revolution 1917. For these two centuries the capital was St. Petersburg. The Russian Empire was the second largest contiguous Empire in world memory; only the Mongol Empire had been greater.Check out what's happening north of Mongolia these days, in ChitaAlthough you may not have heard of Sochi, on the Black Sea, they're building up quickly and hope to host the 2014 Olympics.Other periods of Russian history include the Tsardom of Russia, from Ivan IV to Peter the Great, and the Grand Duchy (14th-16th centuries). The earliest period of Russian history was ruled by the Novgorod Republic and Kievan Rus, which was the first Russian state dating back to 800AD in Kiev.Modern Russia remains one of the world's superpowers. They launched the earth's second satellite, called Sputnik 1, and were the first country to put a human being into orbit around earth. (The first one is called the Moon.)After the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia became a federal republic of 83 states.Text by Steve Smith.
