Under the documents which have kept in the state archives, Naberezhnye Chelny in Russian annals for the first time are mentioned in 1626. The status of city has received in 1930. on November, 18th, 1982, in connection with death of the Secretary general of the Central Committee of the CPSU of Leonid Ilicha Brezhnev, city have renamed in? Brezhnev?. The former name have returned in the end of 1987
