Shakotan Peninsula is famous with its cliffs and rocks of strange shapes, as well as the beautiful sea, referred to as "Shakotan Blue". The water of Shimamui Coast is clear and transparent which is why the coast is listed among top 100 beaches in Japan. In early summer, the cliffs are covered with yellow flowers called hemerocallis esculenta; this view is especially beautiful and eye-pleasing.
The view along the tunnel going through the coast is recommended by Shakotan Tourist Association. The tunnel is 30m long and it is pretty dark. However, when you exit from the tunnel, you will be impressed by the azure of the sea; this contrast is pretty amazing. There is a chance you can meet sea-eagle, seals and sea-lions, as well as many other marine creatures.
