Church of San Salvador, Celanova, Ourense, Galicia, Spain
Spain

Placed in the village of Celanova (province of Ourense, Galicia, NW of Spain), in its Praza Maior, and attached to the monastery of San Salvador (founded by San Rosendo), from which it is a part, it is a baroque church that began to be built in the 17th century, under the direction of Melchor de Velasco, to replace the primitive Romanesque. It has a Latin cross plan, with three naves and large pilasters on which rests a groined vault and a dome in the transept, the latest a Pedro de Monteagudo work. Inside, several altarpieces by Castro Canseco are admirable, especially the main one, in great baroque style, with formidable Solomonic columns and exquisite carvings. Also noteworthy are the two choirs, attributed to Castro Canseco as well, the upper one in plateresque style with thirty-eight seats, and the lower one with twenty-eight, with its backrests adorned with carvings representing saints of the Benedictine Order (upper ones) and scenes from life in the monastery (the lowers), and which are a unique work of Galician baroque.
