The Copper River From a Richardson Highway Viewpoint in Alaska
Alaska

In terms of flow, the Copper River is the tenth largest river in the USA. It is about 287 miles long. Starting at the Copper Glacier on the shoulder of Mount Wrangell, it runs 287 miles and meets the Gulf of Alaska near Cordova. The Copper River watershed covers 24,000 square miles. It is famous for the two million salmon that run up river each year to spawn.

Across the river is the Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve. It is the largest national park in the USA and contains nine of the 16 highest peaks in the United States. The mountains to the southeast are the Wrangell Mountains. From this viewpoint along Alaska’s Richardson Highway, it is about 15 to 20 miles to the foothills of the Wrangells. In all of this view there are no towns, no developments and no roads.
