富士市吉原の香久山妙法寺は、地元では「毘沙門天」の名で親しまれている。聖徳太子が彫ったと伝えられている「毘沙門天」をまつっていることがその由来となっているようだ。寺院自体は1627年の創建、日蓮宗の寺院なのだが、寺の入り口には「鳥居」が有ったり、建造物の中には「インド風」「中国風」といった異なる様式の建造物(それらはコンクリート製の比較的新しい建物)があるといったように、雑多なものが混然としている。
毎年旧暦正月の7~9日(2016年は2月14~16日)には「毘沙門天大祭」が行われる。この祭りでは「だるま市」が開かれるのだが規模が大きく、高崎市の少林寺、東京の深大寺のだるま市と共に「日本三大だるま市」として知られている。例年三日間で50万人が訪れるという。
The eight islands of Japan sprang into existence through Divine Intervention.The first two gods who came into existence were Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto, the Exalted Male and Exalted Female.
