Downtown Glennallen, Alaska
Alaska

Never having won the "Prettiest Little Town in Alaska" award, Glennallen is none the less an important hub of commerce and government in the interior of southeast Alaska. It's important because there is a real supermarket here. The next closest supermarket is in Palmer. There is a bank with an automatic teller machine. You can also buy gas, diesel and attend Alaska's only accredited 4-year Bible College. The Alaska State Troopers have offices here as does the Department of Interior's Bureau of Land Management. Other attractions include a health clinic and... a radio station!

Glennallen residents take issue when outsiders describe the rambling dwellings and businesses as "outskirts with no downtown". For years one of the restaurant / gas stations along the highway posted a sign which read "Glennallen, this is it."
Glennallen is 189 miles northeast of Anchorage. Winter temperatures can dip to less than minus 50 degrees F while summer temperatures in the 80's have been recorded. City-data.com rates Glennallen as #28 on their list of "Top 101 cities with the largest temperature differences during a year"
With a population of about 500 people, Glennallen's population density comes to just 4.5 people per square mile.
