The small town of Cowell, officially gazetted in 1880, is located 490 km northwest of Adelaide on the Eyre Peninsula. Cowell is a service centre for fishing, sheep, wheat and a jade industry. It is located on the 49 square kilometre big but shallow Franklin Harbour with a shoreline of mangroves and mud. The town is a popular place for fishing holidays, features a National Trust Folk Museum, 2 historic hotels and a Jade Factory.

Eyre Peninsula is bordered by Spencer Gulf and Great Australian Bight with over 2,000 kilometres of coastline for fishing, whale watching, watersports, swimming with sea lions or diving with sharks.
