Guang Jin Sheng Oil-Paper Umbrella
Taiwan

The traditional oil-paper umbrella is made with wooden frames and hand-colored paper polished with candlenut tree oil. The traditional technique of making oil-paper umbrella in the Meinong District came to Taiwan from Guangdong Province during the Japanese rule. During its prime years, the number of umbrellas produced annually could go over 20,000. After the 1960s, however, more durable modern umbrellas took over. Guang Jin Sheng is one of the most popular makers of oil-paper umbrellas. Over the years, the owners of the brand have insisted on staying in the business even during the worst time, and thanks to the thriving tourist industry and media reports, the oil-paper umbrella has regained popularity, this time as delicate souvenirs or gifts.
